Tommy Lee Jones' transformation from '70s soap opera heartthrob to Oscar-winning actor as he turns 80

The Texas native completed his degree at Harvard in 1969 and immediately moved to New York City to kickstart his acting career. 

The roguishly handsome actor made his Broadway debut in 1969's A Patriot for Me, before nabbing his first film role in 1970's Love Story.

Tommy's big break came in 1971 when he won the role of Dr Mark Toland on the hit soap opera One Life to Live, and he stayed with the show for four years before pursuing other projects. 

In the series, Tommy's character was a dashing and suave bachelor, which he played to perfection, before the star grew tired of Mark's wild storylines.  

"They had me kill my parents! About the nicest thing I did was take drugs," he once shared in an interview. 

Tommy went on to act in Jackson County Jail, Rolling Thunder, The Betsy and Eyes of Laura Mars in the '70s, and also found love with actress Kate Lardner, whom he married in 1971.

The pair split in 1978 after seven years of marriage, with Kate later claiming in her memoir, Shut Up He Explained: A Memoir of Growing Up on the Blacklist, that his drinking "scared" her during their relationship.

Tommy transformed into a reliable and bankable star in the '80s thanks to his Golden Globe nomination for 1980's Coal Miner's Daughter, his Emmy win in 1983 for The Executioner's Song and another Emmy nomination in 1989 for Lonesome Dove.

Tommy found love again in the '80s with Kimberlea Cloughey, whom he married in 1981 and welcomed kids Austin and Victoria with. 

During this time, he continued to captivate audiences with his rugged good looks and intense screen performances.

The '90s marked Tommy's most successful decade, as well as one filled with personal heartbreak. During this time, it seemed that every film he starred in was a major hit, including JFK, The Fugitive, Cobb, Men in Black and Batman Forever. 

He also took home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor at the 1994 Academy Awards for his performance in The Fugitive. 

​Tommy began to age from a heartthrob into a highly respected actor and leader in Hollywood. The Oscar winner sadly split from Kimberlea in 1996 and became a single dad to Austin and Victoria.

While Tommy continued to make movies throughout the '00s and married his third wife, Dawn Lauren, in 2001, he began to retreat from the spotlight. 

The father of two admitted to Texas Monthly in 2006 that he preferred to spend time on his cattle ranch in Texas rather than be amongst the stars in Los Angeles. "The gates are locked. We keep it shut down," he said of his home. 

"Just friends and family, no outsiders. Just how I like it…In the summers, we'll work cattle, and then at about 7 p.m. at night, we'll start playing polo. We'll play until about 9, and then when we're done, we put the meat on the fire and watch the dark come. It's a good life. Everyone is happy."

In the mid-'00s, Tommy began to experience a resurgence in Hollywood, thanks to a string of Oscar, BAFTA and SAG Award nominations and his role in No Country for Old Men.

In recent years, Tommy has solidified himself as a titan of the industry and is still working despite being an octogenarian. 

However, the actor experienced immense heartbreak in January after his daughter, Victoria, passed away at age 34 following an accidental drug overdose.

"We appreciate all of the kind words, thoughts, and prayers. Please respect our privacy during this difficult time. Thank you," Tommy and his family shared in a statement at the time.

Victoria was an actress like her dad, having appeared in Men in Black II, One Tree Hill and The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada, but had struggled with addiction for several years.

She was arrested at twice in 2025, once for drug possession and another time for domestic battery, both of which she pleaded not guilty to.
