Before Tom Cruise became one of Hollywood's A-listers, he was an average guy with a regular job.
The actor opened up about his job as a hard-working superintendent's assistant when he moved to New York's Upper West Side, during his interview with Chris Connelly for Good Morning America on September 23.
Tom's passion for giving every responsibility his full attention and effort was evident way before he began doing all his own stunts in his action-packed hit films.
© Getty ImagesChris commented: "When people couldn't get their heat because their oil wasn't there, they complained to you?"
Tom replied: "Yes, it's true. I would have to go down and fix their heating. I shoveled the ice everyday. I made sure that the garbage was taken out…"
Chris interjected: "I bet you were 200 percent on that too, right?"
Tom joked: "I was," as he blurted out laughing to himself, and massaging his face out of anxiety, while commenting: "Chris…I know, I know," while in disbelief himself.
The movie star admitted: "I am. I can't help it. I'm like, 'I wanna fix it. I got this.'"
© Getty ImagesEarlier in the interview, Tom spoke about giving his all to any movie set to make sure he gets it right, regardless of his demanding schedule.
He revealed how he met Digger director Alejandro González Iñárritu on the first day of filming.
Tom recalled: "So, I shot all day. I had to fly back to L.A., got on a motorcycle, went to [Alejandro's] office and we just spent many, many hours till early in the morning, and then I got up and went to work."
© Getty ImagesTom's co-star on Digger, Riz Ahmed commended Tom's consistent persistence to defy the odds and test the limits himself.
Riz interjected: "He was doing that kind of thing and we were in rehearsal, and we were all exhausted and Tom was like, 'Alright, I'm getting in the water tank now,' and he's going into a sub-zero temperature water tank, with a true-life stunt for Mission. He's gonna fly himself there on a helicopter. There's this relentless kind of dynamo energy that's inspiring to be around."
Chris inquired: "You don't do anything half-way ever, do you?"
© Getty ImagesTom acknowledged: "I don't know how else to do it – it's so fun because I'm learning constantly."
Tom also shed some wholesome light on just how much his life has become a dream come true and he has no plans of slowing down.
He concluded: "It's a real gift and I dreamed of a life to be able to do this [for] the rest of my life as a kid and everyday I'm thinking, 'You know what? I can't control what's gonna happen, but what I can control is, I can just do the best I can.'"
