Eva Mendes has taken fans back to her childhood with an adorable throwback photograph, and one small detail has sparked plenty of recognition.
The actress, 52, shared a portrait of her younger self smiling at the camera, complete with a feathered haircut, a frilly white collar and a dark ribbon tied at her neckline.
But it was the jewellery around her neck that Eva wanted followers to notice, and many immediately recognised something from their own childhoods.
"Of course little me has a necklace with my name on it. Classic Cuban," she wrote on Instagram. "I also had my azabache... IYKYK," she added, finishing with a red heart.
Eva Mendes' childhood necklace sparks fan memories
The photograph showed Eva wearing a delicate chain with a nameplate pendant, a detail that prompted followers to share memories of their own treasured pieces. "Im 41 and I still wear my name plate necklace I got when I was 3," one commented, adding: "Cubanita for life."
Another revealed that they still had their own name necklace, although they no longer wore it. The haircut proved just as familiar. One follower wrote: "Fifth grade. I had this same haircut!"
With its full fringe and flicked-out ends, Eva's childhood hairstyle framed the broad smile that remains instantly recognisable today.
Her post also caught the attention of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit star Mariska Hargitay, who left a simple, affectionate response: "I love her".
At the time of the screenshot, the photograph had attracted more than 44,000 likes.
Eva Mendes celebrates her Cuban roots
Eva's caption placed her family heritage at the centre of the throwback. Born in Miami to Cuban parents, the actress grew up in Los Angeles following her parents' separation. She later became familiar to audiences through films including Training Day, 2 Fast 2 Furious and Hitch.
The childhood photograph offered a glimpse of life long before those red carpets, with Eva focusing on the accessories and traditions she remembered.
It is not the first time she has revisited her early years. In April, she shared a childhood memory involving her mother and singer José Luis Rodríguez, known as El Puma, reflecting on the music and experiences that shaped her upbringing.
Eva Mendes' life with Ryan Gosling and their daughters
Eva is now raising two daughters with Ryan Gosling: Esmeralda, born in 2014, and Amada, born in 2016. The couple have been together since 2011, when they worked on The Place Beyond the Pines.
Although she enjoys sharing her own memories online, Eva has maintained clear boundaries around her children's privacy.
Her work has also expanded beyond acting. In September 2024, she published Desi, Mami, and the Never-Ending Worries, a picture book illustrated by Abbey Bryant about a little girl and her mother navigating anxious thoughts at bedtime.
More recently, Eva introduced another addition to the household: rescue dog Charlie. Sharing photographs in July, she announced the arrival of the family's newest companion.
Her approach to sharing family life remains selective. As she explained on Instagram in April 2020: "I'll talk about them of course, with limits, but I won't post pictures of our daily life."
