Walter Koenig, whose portrayal of Pavel Chekov made him a familiar face to generations of Star Trek fans, has died at 90.
The actor died at his home in North Hollywood, with his daughter Danielle and his niece by his side, his representative confirmed. News of his death was announced on October 26, prompting tributes to a performer whose connection with audiences lasted long beyond his years aboard the Enterprise.
Among those remembering Walter was George Takei, who played fellow crew member Hikaru Sulu. Their friendship began on the original television series and continued through decades of films, conventions and personal milestones.
Walter was also George's best man when he married husband Brad Altman in 2008, a reflection of the bond they maintained away from the screen.
George Takei remembers Walter Koenig
Sharing his grief on social media, George remembered the colleague who became a lifelong friend. "Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades," he wrote.
Walter joined Star Trek in its second season in 1967, playing the young Russian navigator alongside William Shatner's Captain Kirk and Leonard Nimoy's Spock.
He remained with the program until the original series ended in 1969, later returning as Chekov in seven feature films. His character became part of the franchise's enduring vision of people from different backgrounds working together.
His association with the fictional universe continued into later life. In 2023, he made a voice appearance in the final season of Star Trek: Picard, playing Anton Chekov, the son of his original character.
Walter Koenig's family and life beyond Star Trek
Away from his best-known role, Walter built another devoted following as Alfred Bester in Babylon 5. He also worked as a writer, with television credits including The Incredible Hulk and Family.
His personal life included a marriage lasting more than half a century. Walter married actress Judy Levitt in 1965, and they remained together until her death in 2022.
The couple shared two children, Danielle and Andrew. Judy also appeared in several Star Trek films, giving the franchise another connection to their family life.
Walter continued receiving recognition for his acting in his later years, winning a Platinum Award for Best Actor at the 2026 Independent Shorts Awards for Mr. Fleischmann.
For many admirers, however, their most personal memories came from meeting him at conventions, where he remained closely connected to the community that had supported his work.
His representatives recalled that generosity in their tribute: "Through countless convention appearances and interactions with fans, he shared his kindness, wit, and appreciation with everyone fortunate enough to meet him."
