Jennifer Lopez got candid about the emotional turmoil she faced after her twins, Max and Oskar, moved out of home to kickstart their college careers.

The 57-year-old revealed that she wrote a song about the experience, in a cathartic move that helped her work through her feelings. The song, called "Proof of Love", will appear as a bonus track on the vinyl release of her 2011 album Love?

"[Kids] take up such a big part of your brain for so long, and when they're gone, which is devastating and sad and scary, you're facing a life that's totally different now, and you're like, 'What am I going to do with this space and this time?' For me, I just went back to the studio," she told Variety.

Jennifer explained that while the new track was a dance song, it reflected on navigating "pain and grief" after her children moved out.

"I wanted to make that a happy thing. I wanted to make that a marker instead of this devastating thing," she said.

Jennifer added that she was "really excited" for her new album and had written "some of the best songs" of her career. "It's a very happy-era album. It's some of the most joyous, beautiful songs that have just a tad of a tear in them."

Max and Oskar's path to college

The entertainer welcomed her twins in 2008 with her then-husband, Marc Anthony, before the pair went their separate ways in 2011. Max and Oskar worked hard to get into college, and according to their mom, both received scholarships.

"I am so proud that they set goals for themselves," Jennifer told Extra. "They all got into all five colleges that they applied to. I watched how hard they worked."

She continued: "They have ADHD, and so they need to learn differently, and there were struggles and times [of hardship], and I'm just so proud of them because they did what they said they were going to do, and they're good people."

"I always say to them, 'What do I say?' And they say, 'Doesn't matter if we get good grades so long as we're good people,'" the "Get On the Floor" singer added. "And they still sometimes will quote that back to me. So I'm very, very proud of both of them."

Jennifer has been on quite the emotional rollercoaster in recent years, after reuniting with her ex-fiancé, Ben Affleck, tying the knot with him in 2022, and divorcing two years later. Despite their split, Jennifer and Ben have seemingly maintained a friendship and have only had kind things to say about the other in interviews.

"I stand in enormous respect for what she's been able to achieve, and she's always done it by saying, 'Even if nobody else believes in me, I'm going to bet on myself,'" Ben shared on The Moment with Jorge and Paola Ramos.

"She's also taken real risks, invested her own money, she's done all the things that we're told, 'This is what great American entrepreneurs do.' She's done them to spectacular success, and I have nothing but respect for her."

The actor added: "She also is probably the hardest working person that I've ever known. I feel like I work pretty hard, but around her, I've always thought like, 'Woo, damn, you know, that's really something.'"
