General Hospital's Genie Francis was left in tears on October 30, 2026 as she accepted the Daytime Emmys' Lifetime Achievement Award from her husband of almost 40 years, Star Trek's Jonathan Frakes.
The pair had earlier walked the red carpet, an incredibly rare moment for the private couple, with Genie and Jonathan both wrapping a tight arm around each other for pictures. Their last notable carpet together was in 2008.
For the 2026 Daytime Emmys, Genie, 64 wore a sparkling black sequined blazer that helped her stand out from the crowd as well as black pants and a white silk shirt, and kept her make-up neutral with a pretty pink lip that highlighted her eyes.
She also wore a boot on her right foot, revealing a recent ankle break that was slowly healing.
Jonathan wore a navy blue blazer with black silk lapels, and matching pants and tie.
His introduction on stage spoke proudly of the respect his wife had earned in the industry, telling stories about how Patrick Swayze, whom she worked with on North and South, and General Hospital's Maurice Benard, had shared with Jonathan how she had made "their work better."
"There is no one more prepared, collaborative, or helpful, or professional, or funny," he continued, speaking of his own collaborations with Genie; they have worked on 12 projects together since 1982's Bare Essence.
"It is with enormous pride and endless love that I present this Lifetime Achievement Award to my wonderful wife," he said.
"I am absolutely overwhelmed," Genie began, thanking her children for "flying out here and for getting me up these steps" – her two children, daughter Eliza and son Jameson, had helped her onto the stage, and she revealed she was recovering from a broken ankle. She added: "So thank you for supporting me — literally and figuratively."
"I know 50 years sounds like an awfully long time, but it doesn’t feel like it to me," she said.
She continued: "As they say, if you love what you do, you never work a day in your life," before joking: "I wouldn’t go quite that far because doing party scenes in high heels is definitely hard work."
"But honestly, I have had the most amazing ride, and I am so grateful. I have had nothing but blessings, and a lot of fun, and the time has flown by. I love what I do as much now as when I first started. The joy of doing the work, the day to day, has never left me."
She concluded her speech by thanking Jonathan for his "unwavering support and love," adding: "Truly, my cup runneth over."
As Genie turned to leave, she gave her children, who had remained on stage with Jonathan, a warm embrace and a kiss before leaving.
Genie was 20-years-old and has been starring in the ABC soap for five years when she took a role in the television miniseries Bare Essence, alongside 30-year-old actor Jonathan.
They stayed in touch, and two years later they reunited for the miniseries North and South, during which they fell in love.
“So we were on location in Charleston and Natchez, and we fell in love – and now, somehow, she wasn't too young for me. So we have been together ever since our first date on North and South when we took a break for Memorial Day and went to New Orleans 38 years ago," Jonathan said in 2023 of those first few months together.
