Super foods: The key to younger looking skin

Plastic surgeon Dr Rozina Ali left the operating theatre behind for the frontiers of skin science, asking if it is possible to make your skin look younger without surgery, on BBC2 programme Horizon.

She discovered the latest research about how the foods we eat can protect our skin from damage, and how a chemical found in a squid's eye is at the forefront of a new sun protection cream.

She also found out how sugar in our blood can make us look older, and explored an exciting new science called glycobiology, which promises a breakthrough in making us look younger.

Fiona Hunter, qualified dietician and Nutritionist of the Simple Advisory Board which encourages a holistic lifestyle approach to skin health, says: "Our skin cells are constantly being renewed, which means they have very high nutritional needs and as a result even a marginal deficiency in a vitamin or mineral means a dietary imbalance is quickly reflected in the condition of the skin.

Fruit and vegetables are rich in antioxidants which can help neutralise the free radicals that cause wrinkles and fine lines.

Essential fatty acids also help to keep the skin supple and prevent dryness which accelerates ageing."
