Three months after her shock split with husband Tom Cruise and the heartbreak of her subsequent miscarriage of their baby, Nicole Kidman was at last able to smile again last week as her new movie Moulin Rouge dazzled the critics in Cannes.
Looking stunning, Nicole basked in glory as the lavish £35 million movie, which was directed by fellow Australian Baz Luhrmann and had been chosen for the prestigious opening slot at the annual film festival, was almost universally praised as a triumph.
Sharing in Nicole’s triumph was her co-star, Scottish actor Ewan McGregor, who plays an absinthe-drinking writer who falls in love with Nicole’s character Satine. As one critic put it, the pair were “the sweetest musical duo since Gene Kelly and Cyd Charisse.”
