Bob Geldof struck a studious pose this week as he was awarded an honorary doctorate from Newcastle University. The former Boomtown Rats singer wore traditional robes and hat over his smart pinstripe suit at the ceremony in Gateshead.
He joined Gordon Brown and three others in receiving a Doctor of Civil Law degree, in recognition of their achievements with the Make Poverty History campaign. The Chancellor was full of praise for Dublin-native Bob, one of the individuals who he says he most admires in the world. "What can you say about Bob Geldof? He is my mentor and he is my tormentor," he said.
The Do They Know It's Christmas? singer is famous for his efforts to tackle poverty through the Live Aid concerts, while Gordon Brown was instrumental in getting G8 countries to agree a debt relief package for some of the world's poorest countries.
