Christiansborg Palace in Copenhagen has just opened its doors to one of the most eagerly anticipated exhibitions in recent memory – a display of some of the 1,800 gifts that flooded in for Crown Prince Frederik and his Australian bride Mary Donaldson.
Certain gifts cannot be included in the exhibition because of their size – the five cars the couple received, for example. And visitors won't be expecting to see the horse and the puppy which have also been promised as gifts. But there is still a staggering amount of stuff to see: everything from hand-sketched pictures of the popular newlyweds to a lawnmower with the royal monogram on it.
"This is an overwhelmingly large amount of presents," admitted head of the royal household Lord Chamberlain Ove Ullerup. The young royals are planning to find a use for all the presents and have pledged that none will be given away, though some will be stored rather than displayed.
Among the offerings that poured in for Frederik and Mary, who exchanged vows on May 14, was a pair of mountainbikes, one of them complete with babyseat.
