The sun-drenched gardens of the Zarzuela Palace were the perfect backdrop for the christening of the newest addition to Spain's royal family on Thursday.
Cradled in her mother's arms, baby Irene, daughter of Infanta Cristina and her husband Iñaki Urdangarin, was baptised in Madrid nearly six weeks after her birth in the port city of Barcelona.
The youngest member of the Infanta's brood – and the only girl of four children – was blessed with water from the river Jordan, following a long-held family tradition.
Among those gathered for the special occasion was Irene's pregnant aunt, Crown Princess Letizia, with the expectant future queen weathering the summer heat with the help of her traditional Spanish fan.
The baby, who has three brothers, Juan Valentín, Pablo Nicolas and Miguel, was born on June 5. Ninth in line to the throne, she is the sixth grandchild of King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia. |
