Mario's 1997 session with Princess Diana, which was commissioned by Vanity Fair, was to be the iconic royal's last shoot. Published just six months before she tragically lost her life in a car accident, the pictures were destined to become part of her ongoing myth.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, there has been no shortage of public interest in the photos that didn't make it into the magazine, but the photographer was reluctant to release them until now. The princess' fans will be delighted to learn that an invitation to stage an exhibition at Diana's one-time home has caused the Peruvian snapper to have a change of heart, however.

"I had to wait for the right time," he explains. "Now Kensington Palace has invited me to do this, it feels right. It's almost ten years since she died. It's time to celebrate her life."
