Martinhal, a retreat in the Algarve

Overlooking the Atlantic, between the Natural Park of Southwest Alentejo and Costa Vicentina, this boutique hotel boasts modern architecture, elegant design and green credentials.

The sunshine, the beaches, the scenery... everything seems to have been arranged to ensure that a getaway at this five-star retreat in the Portuguese Algarve brims with peace and relaxation – not to mention sophistication!

Located in the Sagres area, on the Praia do Martinhal, the Martinhal hotel is part of a resort comprising 67 villas and chalets (from two to six rooms), with extensive facilities, including a Nordic-style spa, restaurants for all tastes, pools, gardens and leisure areas.

Opened in 2010, the contemporary silhouette is carefully aligned with the landscape, the sun and views, and constructed from local materials to blend perfectly with the natural setting. The hotel offers 36 rooms and two duplex suites, all with wooden balconies, sea views and a modern atmosphere, the true hallmark of the establishment. Inside you can see the work of the innovative hand of the well-known British designer Michael Sodeau, who has designed furniture and other pieces exclusively for the Martinhal. Once more, the focus is on minimalist lines and the use of local materials, resulting in such tasteful details as pictures worked in cork and stone, and lamps of palm fibre woven by local artisans.

The luxurious and spacious bedrooms are located in the main building or in small wooden chalets dispersed around the gardens and allowing maximum privacy. Each room has a flat screen televisions, wi-fi, free soft drinks in the minibar and a huge bed with pure cotton bedding, guaranteeing guests' comfort.

The complex offers a range of different style restaurants – O Terraço (Portuguese cuisine with a modern touch), Os Gambozinos and As Dunas (right on the beach and specialising in seafood) for lighter meals. The Finisterra Nordic-style spa is an oasis of calm where you can enjoy an aromatherapy massage, while, if you're looking for something more active, there's a list to suit all tastes: swimming pools, gym, beach club, tennis courts, kids' mini-club and even bikes if you fancy a ride along to Cabo de San Vicente.
