Richard Gere was Hollywood's most handsome heartthrob throughout the 1980s thanks to his roles in American Gigolo, Breathless and An Officer and a Gentleman.

Although the star is a household name today, back in 1971, he was yet to make his silver screen debut, instead appearing in several plays, including a production of Long Time Coming, Long Time Gone.

The Off-Broadway musical saw the then 22-year-old appearing opposite Vicki Sue Robinson, with the production based on the life, writings and music of bohemian author and songwriter, Richard Fariña, and his wife, Mimi Fariña.

In an image from the production, a young Richard could be seen alongside his co-star, and he's miles away from the silver fox that fans know today.

In the black-and-white photo, Richard has shoulder-length black hair, with his long locks curling towards the bottom. The star does, however, continue to rock his usual chiselled jawline as he looks off into the distance.

Richard's family life

The Hollywood star has been married three times, including to Cindy Crawford, Carey Lowell and Alejandra Silva. He is also a father to four children, with his son, Homer, following him into the world of showbusiness.

Speaking to People while promoting the second season of his Paramount+ thriller The Agency, the Pretty Woman star admitted he has been deeply impressed by the way his 26-year-old son has embraced the challenges of Hollywood.

"I'm proud of him on two levels," he said. "One, he's really good. He really kind of preternaturally knows what he's doing."

Homer, whom Richard shares with his former wife Carey Lowell, has quietly begun building an acting career of his own, recently appearing in HBO's hit drama Euphoria opposite Sydney Sweeney.

While Richard confessed he still needs to catch up on one of his son's episodes, he couldn't help but celebrate the exciting opportunities already coming Homer's way. "I still need to see his second episode of Euphoria, but he has this big thing coming up with Ryan Murphy," he revealed.
