George and Amal Clooney's quiet gesture for fire-ravaged community: 'There is no doubt'

George and Amal Clooney were forced to flee their home in the south of France last week as wildfires ravaged the region. The couple, along with around 600 other residents, evacuated the historic village of Brignoles when a fire broke out near the area last Wednesday and burned around 320 acres. 

The mayor of Brignoles, Didier Brémond, confirmed on 30 July that all residents could return home. While George, 65, and Amal's 18th-century mansion was spared from the blaze, the couple have pledged their support the village in the aftermath.

In a letter addressed to the mayor, the Ocean's Eleven actor said he and Amal, 48, were "committed to making sure that whatever happens to our village, we are part of this community and we'll be part of making it whole". 

In a new interview with the French news channel BFMTV, Mayor Brémond has said there is "no doubt" that George will contribute to the rebuilding efforts following the natural disaster. 

Expressing complete confidence in the actor's support, Brémond said: "I know he's going to contribute, there's no doubt about that."

He also noted that such an act of generosity is typical for George, adding: "He does it every time the town or area is affected. He wants to participate precisely to feel fully integrated."

George and Amal's Brignoles home

George and Amal bought their 18th-century hilltop estate in 2021 for a reported $8.3 million.

Named Domaine du Canadel, the 425-acre estate boasts a 25-acre vineyard, a swimming pool, a tennis court, olive groves and a private ornamental lake.

George and Amal spend much of their time at the luxury mansion, where they have been raising their twin children, Alexander and Ella, away from the limelight. 

The family were awarded French citizenship in December.

What did George Clooney write in his letter to Mayor Didier Brémond?

After evacuating their home, George wrote a letter to Mayor Didier Brémond, which was shared by his publicist Guido Gotz.

It read: "Dear Didier, At this point we have no idea whether our beautiful home makes it through this terrible moment.

"As we evacuate Brignoles we want to emphasise two things, first we hope you and the people of our city are safe and second that Amal and I are committed to making sure that whatever happens to our village, we are part of this community and we’ll be part of making it whole.

"We love Brignoles and our friends who live there."
