One of the biggest films of the 1980s was Footloose, which follows rebellious teenager Ren McCormack, played by Kevin Bacon, as he moves to a town that has banned dancing.

During the story, Ren falls for Ariel Moore (Lori Singer), the daughter of strict minister Reverend Shaw Moore (John Lithgow), who introduced the ban after the loss of his son in a car accident.

The film proved to be a breakout role for Kevin, who has since starred in the likes of JFK, A Few Good Men, Apollo 13 and City on a Hill. However, Lori has not experienced the same level of success, and has mostly stepped away from Hollywood.

So what happened to the star whose brother is also an actor? Here is everything you need to know about Lori's career since Footloose…

Where is Lori Singer now?

Lori, now aged 68, continued acting for several decades after starring alongside Kevin in the hit musical. The movie served as her big-screen debut, and she subsequently starred in The Falcon and the Snowman, Trouble in Mind and Warlock.

However, towards the end of the 1990s and early 2000s, she opted to step away from acting, and she has only had seven film credits since the turn of the millennium, including playing the titular Rachel Hendrix in the 2023 drama film of the same name.

Lori has focused on music and directing

Speaking to the New York Post, Lori revealed that she was very hands-on during the filming of Footloose, including with its controversial domestic abuse scene. "I choreographed a lot of the physical stuff," she told the publication.

"I grew up with three brothers, I spent part of my life in Texas. I've had to actually fight a few times. Anyway, I've had some rough stuff happen, because we travelled a lot growing up, my family. I think a lot of actors have had that experience that you have to reinvent yourself every time. All that fighting stuff, I've actually experienced a certain amount of it."

Although Lori has mostly left Hollywood behind, she's actually followed in her father's footsteps by becoming a musician. The star's father was symphony conductor Jacques Singer, who passed away at the age of 70, four years before Lori starred in Footloose.

Before she became an actress, she was a cellist, and she was just 13 when she made her debut performance with the Oregon Symphony. She was also admitted to Juilliard School, and at the time she was the institution's youngest-ever graduate.

Lori hasn't fully stepped away from movies, but she now takes on a more behind-the-scenes role. She is currently working on the docudrama Wonder Drug, which examines the DES scandal, where pregnant women were prescribed the drug before studies found it increased cancer and reproductive issues in both mothers and daughters.

Lori Singer's famous brother

Lori isn't the only actor in her family, as her older brother, Marc, is also in the business. Marc made his professional debut in 1973, playing a doctor in an episode of Columbo, before going on to star in the likes of Go Tell the Spartans, In the Cold of the Night, Street Corner Justice and Agent Recon.

The 78-year-old has had a successful TV career, with credits in Hawaii Five-O, The Twilight Zone, Dallas, Beastmaster and AJ and the Queen. His best-known role was in the V franchise, playing Mike Donovan in the original 1983 sci-fi miniseries, its sequel V: The Final Battle, and the subsequent television series.
