Tom Selleck is Hollywood royalty and has received multiple Emmy, People's Choice and Golden Globe Awards.
The star is widely known for his roles in Magnum PI, Three Men and a Baby and Quigley Down Under, but perhaps better recognised by his bushy Chevron moustache – a style he popularised while appearing as private investigator Thomas Magnum in the 1980s.
However, before the star had cemented his place in Hollywood, he was often asked to shave off his moustache for different acting gigs. Discover what the acting legend looked like without his signature facial hair…
Tom was married to his first wife, Jacquelyn Ray, for eleven years
While Tom Selleck is now known as one of Hollywood's biggest leading men, he didn't get his big break until he was in his mid-thirties.
He spent many of his early years acting in advertisements and appearing in minor on-screen roles. His first acting gig came in 1969 when he was just 24 years old, appearing as 'Stud' in Myra Breckinridge alongside Mae West.
His first big break came at the age of 35 in 1980, playing the role of Thomas Magnum in the eight-season television series, Magnum, P.I. It would eventually land him Emmy and Golden Globe awards and become the role he's best known for.
Tom looks completely unrecognisable without his bushy moustache
While he's now well-known for his facial furniture, in his early acting career he was actually told to rock a bare upper lip. In his role as Jed Andrews on The Young and the Restless, the 28-year-old actor was told to shave off his moustache to land the role.
On removing his facial hair for early roles, he said: "Most of the time I got hired, they said the moustache was okay but [sometimes] you've got to shave it off for the job. So I was born without it and prepared to work without it."
There have been a few other times when the actor has changed up his look, including a brief stint with a beard in the 90s. But, for the most part, Tom has kept his bushy moustache – something we're definitely glad of.
Since his role as Jed Andrews in The Young and the Restless, the actor's career has grown from strength to strength.
He received five Emmy Award nominations for his role as Thomas Magnum in Magnum, P.I. Tom also went on to appear in Blue Bloodsas NYC Police Commissioner Frank Reagan. For fans of the hit 90s sitcom Friends, Tom might be better known as Dr Richard Burke, Monica Geller's love interest.
Outside of television, the star played Peter Mitchell in Three Men and a Baby and later Matthew Quigley in Quigley Down Under.
In 1971, Tom married model Jacqueline Ray and adopted her son, Kevin Shephard. After the couple divorced in 1982, Tom married his now-wife Jillie Mack in 1987, and they became parents to their daughter, Hannah Margaret Selleck, in 1988.
