Now the summer heatwave is well and truly over and there's a definite chill appearing in the air, we're looking at how we can update our wardrobes for autumn and which key pieces we need to be buying. And it looks like Marks & Spencer may have given us a sneak preview of THE skirt of the season – which we're expecting to see everywhere. The high street favourite posted an image to its Instagram account on Monday of a distinctive purple midi skirt featuring an A-line cut, sculptural front pleat and large pockets, and fashion fans have been sent into a spin – despite the piece not even being available to buy yet.

Fashion fans are going wild for this 80s-inspired look

The post racked up thousands of likes in just one day. One follower commented: "Oh that skirt is gorgeous," and another added: "searching morning, noon and night for the skirt...". One simply wrote: "Want that skirt!!!" The in-demand piece was styled in the image with an 80s-inspired batwing jumper featuring a graphic triangle design in deep purple, lilac and bright pink. The account captioned the image: "Score serious style points in cosy statement knitwear this Autumn. Skirt coming soon!!"

Marks & Spencer has been killing it recently when it comes to hit pieces. First of all, we had THAT white and blue striped design which was hailed as the "dress of the summer". Then of course, there was the arrival of the leopard print midi dress, with the neon stripe down the side that sold out at an impressive rate. Shoppers loved it so much that M&S released a follow up in navy blue polka dots, with a splash of red in place of where the neon detail was before.

Most recently, M&S introduced a jumpsuit that created such a huge buzz that it actually sold out in just 24 hours online, ahead of its release. The £38.50 design is made in a deep navy blue, has red detail and features a smock waist, open back and ruched sleeves. We’re expecting this skirt to be a sell-out too!
