Yellowstone star Luke Grimes has opened up about his relationship with Kevin Costner, two years after the Field of Dreams star left the hit neo-Western drama.
Luke starred as Kayce Dutton, the son of Kevin's John Dutton, throughout the show's five-season run.
Kevin stepped down from his role halfway through season five, citing delayed scripts and scheduling clashes with his passion project, the Western film Horizon: An American Saga.
In a new interview with USA Today, Luke revealed that he hasn't spoken to Kevin since his departure from the show due to their busy schedules.
"I have never spoken to Kevin since we stopped working together," he said. "Not for any other reason other than we are both just busy guys and life moves on."
When asked if Kevin might reprise his role for a cameo on the Yellowstone spin-off Marshals, in which Luke stars and executive produces, he said: "I think that would be cool [but] I doubt that would happen, at this point.
"If there was a flashback, I would want it to be with [Kayce's wife] Monica than John," he continued. "I think that would be more poignant to the character, but we will see."
On whether a cameo from Kelsey Asbille, who played Monica in Yellowstone, could be on the cards, Luke added: "There's been no conversation, but I sure would love it. I love working with her."
Luke Grimes' comments on filming season 5
In an interview with Esquire in 2024, Luke said season five was the "easiest" to film.
"To be really honest, there was a part of Kevin being gone that meant some of the conflict was gone," he said. "Obviously, it didn't make it super fun to be around. Not pointing any fingers, but it was actually the easiest season we've filmed."
What has Taylor Sheridan said about Kevin Costner's exit?
In June, creator Taylor Sheridan cleared up any misconceptions about Kevin's departure from the show.
"With Yellowstone, Kevin [Costner] was only supposed to be in the first three seasons," he said during an appearance on The Bill Simmons Podcast. "That was in his contract. And in my mind, that's when his youngest son takes over and then we watch him lose that ranch or not lose it, whatever the case is gonna be."
