Kelly, who has starred as Beth since the beginning of the mothership show, speaking with TV Insider about Beth's return and the heartbreaking events she is grappling with, said: "I think that this is the beginning, if she was able to, to try and heal her heart somewhere. She has her own family with Carter now, and Rip and Beth together, it's almost like leaving the ghosts of her past behind. It's just whether or not they catch up with her, follow her, which they usually do."

Cole returns as Rip Wheeler. Beth, Rip and Carter are now in a new setting where they are no longer the "top dogs," Kelly told People, with Cole adding: "It's like going to the moon for these characters," noting his character will face a significant language barrier as his ranch workers all speak Spanish. "They don't know the land or the people or the environment."

In Yellowstone, Finn's character Carter is a troubled teen who met Beth at the hospital when she was visiting her ailing father, where his own father was dying. After he loses his father to drug addiction, Beth and Rip take in Carter and give him work on the ranch. Beth is unable to have children due to a forced sterilization, and is initially uninterested in motherhood, however she and Rip eventually develop a strong bond with Carter, who stays with them. The events of The Dutton Ranch will take place one year after the final season of Yellowstone.
