How to avoid a skin breakout naturally

Kendall Jenner has been open about her skincare worries, admitting that she suffers with acne and regular skincare breakouts. While she claims to have minimised her breakouts with a bespoke skincare routine, there are some simple, natural ways to beat spots without the need for expensive beauty products.

A number of beauty experts have shared their five top tips for beating breakouts naturally…

1. Water can be a skin saviour

"Staying hydrated is one of the best steps you can take towards a glowing complexion. Our skin not only contains plenty of water, but it also functions as a protective barrier against excess moisture loss. Support your hydration efforts even further by using a moisturiser as a physical barrier to lock all that moisture in," explains Shona Wilkinson, Nutritionist at

2. Zap away zits with Zinc

Snack on pumpkin seeds. "These nutritional gems are excellent sources of zinc, one of the most important minerals for maintaining healthy, happy skin. It is thought that as much as 20% of the body's zinc is stored in the skin, and it has a major role in growth and healing. Deficiency in this mineral is linked with acne; dry skin, dermatitis and poor wound healing," explains Dr Marilyn Glenville, the UK's leading nutritionist.

3. Go natural

"As a GP I see dozens of people every week in my surgery who really struggle to control their skin problems and who prefer to use natural treatments if at all possible," explains Dr Roger Henderson, GP with a special interest in dermatology.

4. Say no to sugar

5. Manage your stress!

"Stress is becoming exceedingly more difficult to avoid in today's fast paced society. It seems that these days everybody is feeling the stress of modern life. However, stress wreaks havoc on our health, particularly our skin health. Many skin disorders such as eczema, psoriasis and rosacea are now being linked to high stress levels," says Cassandra.

"When we are tense, our body releases stress hormones including cortisol, which may increase the skin's oil production, thus giving our skin all it needs for a nasty breakout. Find what works for you in terms of managing your stress levels – yoga, deep breathing, relaxing with a good book."
