Before you ask, no - broderie anglaise is not lace. The design is a traditional technique which is believed to have originated in the Czech Republic and was brought to England at the turn of the 19th century.
Unlike other ephemeral trends, the style of fabric has been in fashion in Blighty ever since, with women of the era wholeheartedly embracing the needlework fabric which incorporates features of embroidery, cutwork and needle lace - so much so that now the textile is associated with England.
It is characterised by holes, called eyelets, which are cut out of the fabric, then bound with overcast or buttonhole stitches and made into patterns on the garment.
The chic needlework technique is something of a summer style classic, and it has even received the royal stamp of approval. The Princess of Wales has worn pieces featuring broderie anglaise on multiple public appearances, adding to the technique's reputation as a signal of feminine polish.
Similarly, the style has caught the attention of It-girls across the globe. Most recently, model, actress and long-time Dôen muse Kaia Gerber took to Instagram to showcase her latest look - a sweet broderie anglaise blouse teamed with blue jeans and a classic beige trench.
Broderie anglaise exudes elegance, making it perfect for the races, Wimbledon or any other chic spring/summer occasion. But it's also hugely versatile and can easily be incorporated into a holiday capsule wardrobe in the form of an airy beach coverup or a vibrant mini.
