Nobody loves a slogan top more than Haim - and now they're designing their own

The Y2K-inspired pieces have become the group's go-to design

I’d consider myself something of a Haim superfan. Having followed Los Angeles natives Este, Danielle and Alana from the very start, when their debut album Days Are Gone hit the British radio in 2013, I’ve become well acquainted with the sisters’ style, both musically and sartorially.

Born and bred Valley girls, Haim's joint wardrobe has taken on a life of its own, anchored by Americana leather trousers, vintage band tees, skater skirts, light-wash jeans and cami vests.

The band’s partnership with Nicolas Ghesquière’s Louis Vuitton marked a turning point in their sartorial evolution. The musical trio started to indulge in the occasional New York and Paris Fashion Week appearance courtesy of the French maison, often stepping out sporting co-ordinating outfits hailing from the brand's latest runway collection.

Yet, throughout their ascension to superstardom across both the music and fashion spheres, one piece has always remained a staple - the irony-tinged slogan top.

I recently delved into the slogan tee trend for our Valentine’s Day Issue: “No garment embodies loud and proud style like the slogan tee. The least cryptic footnote in fashion’s history, slogan tees, be them camis or crop tops, are simple vehicles for effortlessly identifying oneself as an unapologetic dresser.”

Unapologetic summarises Haim’s public image to perfection. The siblings first dabbled in slogans when they teamed up with Urban Outfitters, dropping a curated collection of text-laden tops that read “WTF is a Haim,” “Go Haim or or go home,” and “Right now,” in reference to a track of the same name from their 2017 album Something To Tell You.

A few years later in 2022, the band joined forces with British designer Christopher Kane to produce a limited edition collection of More Joy x Haim tees. The collection consisted of three slogan tops, each in a different colour displaying the names of the Haim sisters across the front.

In true Haim fashion, the sisters once again looked to the trusty slogan tee when announcing their new single Relationships. The trio released a series of T-shirts featuring the words "I’m Single," "I’m Taken," and “I’m ???" after a lengthy social media hiatus.

Now, the band are designing their own slogan pieces. Earlier this week, Alana and Este joined close friend Taylor Swift and Law and Order star Mariska Hargitay for the New York Knicks game. The group, who were perched on the front row at the event, all wore striking blue-orange slogan tees referencing Fleetwood Mac’s Stevie Nicks ( 'Stevie Knicks’, 'Knickelback', 'Knickolas Cage' and 'Knickole Kidman').

The tops were in fact custom made by youngest sister Alana, who has starred in films including Liquorice Pizza, One Battle After Another and, most recently, The Drama. She later told Vogue: “I’ve been so obsessed with merch forever. I’m obsessed with making merch for our tours; my sisters and I love merch, and every time we go on the road, the first thing we do is go to the local thrift store in whatever city we’re in and buy vintage shirts. It’s our tour memento. I’ve wanted to make my own shirts forever, but I could never figure it out, but when I got home from our last tour, I bought a Cricut.”

From tongue-in-cheek tour merchandise to custom courtside creations, the trio have spent over a decade making a case for statement dressing. Sure, trends come and go, but Haim will always be here to back the slogan tee.
