Prince Charles of Luxembourg, whose full name is Charles Jean Philippe Joseph Marie Guillaume, celebrated his 6th birthday on Sunday. It was also his first birthday as first in line to the Grand Duchy, following his father's accession to the throne on 3 October

The eldest son of Guillaume, 44, and Stéphanie, 42, of Luxembourg has captivated everyone since his birth in the spring of 2020. Over the weekend, he was the star of the show, naturally receiving the love and affection of his family.

To mark the special occasion, the monarchy shared a series of tender and heartwarming photographs showing the birthday boy enjoying a sunny day with his family in the gardens of the royal residence. In these snapshots, the young heir appears alone or with his parents and his younger brother, Prince François, three.

As on previous occasions, the two boys were dressed alike, this time in blue trousers, white shirts, and beige sweaters with multicolored stripes across the top. And of course, the celebration wouldn't have been complete without a delicious children's themed cake, this time featuring a nature theme with adorable fir trees and woodland animals like a bear, a fox, and an owl.

Milestone moments

Despite his young age, the grandson of Henri and Maria Teresa of Luxembourg has already experienced very important moments for the Grand Ducal House, such as the proclamation of Guillaume seven months ago. At that solemn ceremony, the boy entered hand in hand with his grandmother and, throughout the session in the Chamber of Deputies, remained very attentive to what was happening.

Regarding his trips abroad, he posed for a historic photograph alongside other heirs from across Europe at the 18th birthday celebration of Princess Ingrid Alexandra of Norway. Nor can we forget when Charles and his family met Pope Leo XIV in person during their joint visit to the Vatican in mid-January. When there is a change in the head of state, it is customary for monarchs of countries with a Catholic tradition to make one of their first official trips to the Holy See, as a form of introduction. During that meeting, the elder brother demonstrated his poise by greeting the ecclesiastical authorities with a handshake.

The Grand Duchess, for her part, had the so-called privilège du blanc during that unforgettable day. This means being able to greet the pontiff dressed in white because she professes that religion - in her case, she wore a long-sleeved dress and a mantilla - which also happens to other queens such as Letizia or Mathilde of Belgium.

Royal role

Charles came into the world on May 10th, exactly six years ago, at 5:13 a.m. in the Grand Duchess Charlotte Maternity Hospital in Luxembourg. The arrival of Guillaume and Stéphanie's firstborn was announced with a 21-gun salute, a sign of respect.

The young prince represents continuity and the future, on a path that will lead him to become the sovereign of the small, wealthy Central European country when the time comes. For now, his role is to learn, grow, and fully enjoy his childhood, while his nation remains in the hands of his parents, who head a hereditary constitutional monarchy embodied by the Nassau-Weilburg dynasty.
