Getting along with your mother means having a built-in best friend for life – but for the royals it's much more than that. From queen to lady, princess to princess, the knowledge of how to live, serve and act as a royal is indispensable and there's plenty of time to forge close bonds during family outings and in private tutelage.

Read on to see the royals enjoying some quality mother-daughter time, with some Windsors bearing a striking resemblance to their mothers.

Princess Margaret is well-remembered as one of the royals' most stylish members. But daughter Lady Sarah Chatto, who she welcomed with then-husband Antony Armstrong-Jones, sported a similarly stylish look when the pair were seen riding a miniature train at Whipsnade Zoo in Bedfordshire in 1973.

Complete with matching looks of concentration, a fabulous pair of sunglasses each and a simple summer dress, the mother and daughter duo couldn't look much more similar.

Royal announcement

The first steps a royal mother takes down from the hospital doors are some of the most exciting for fans around the world – as well as the mother herself.

Perfectly polished and cradling her precious second child, Princess Kate introduced the world to the then-newest royal on 2 May 2015. The Princess clearly couldn't hold back her joy and positively glowed in sunny yellow for the occasion.

A new addition

Queen Elizabeth II only welcomed one daughter out of her four children and was clearly excited to be captured with her new charge.

Standing on her mother's lap in a sweet white gown, Princess Anne certainly looks focussed on the camera but it's the late Queen's gleaming smile that really cements the pair's early bond.

Queen Camilla welcomed two children with her first husband Andrew Parker Bowles before wedding now King Charles III in 2005. The Queen Consort remains close to her two children, and clearly shares a passion for sport with her daughter Laura.

Both smartly dressed for Cheltenham festival, the pair shared many a grin during the day, enjoying some quality time on the racecourse out in the sunshine.

Like mother, like daughter

Most people have had a 'Don't I sound like my mother?' moment, but for Princess Anne and daughter Zara Tindall their similarities were clear from a very young age.

In 1985, the pair attended a horse show with Zara balanced playfully on the Princess' shoulders while they both sported rather serious expressions. For these royals, horses are no laughing matter!

Inherited grace

While Princess Charlotte is clearly something of a lookalike to father Prince William, she has obviously inherited her mother's talent for a carefully crafted wave and camera-ready smile.

The pair showed off their elegant reception to the press at the 2026 Easter Matins Service at St George's Chapel. With outfits that toned well but steered clear of being awkwardly matched, the stylish duo had big grins for the press.

A monarch in waiting

For some royals, it's hard to imagine them before the days of handshakes and state appointments. But even the late Queen Elizabeth II started out as just a baby in her mother's arms.

Born to King George VI and Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, it's clear she was soon a beloved part of the family, cradled carefully by the Queen Mother in a dreamy portrait of the besotted pair.
