Princess Leonor, 20, and Infanta Sofia, 19, lift World Cup trophy 16 years on from Spain's first victory – see adorable then and now photos

Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofia were ecstatic as they joined members of the Spanish football team on the pitch to lift the trophy after their World Cup win on Sunday night. 

The sisters joined their parents, King Felipe and Queen Letizia, to celebrate with the players after they defeated Argentina by one goal in extra time at the New York New Jersey stadium in East Rutherford.

Leonor, 20, who is the country's future Queen, and Sofia, 19, were dressed in their country's colours and were beaming from ear to ear as they celebrated the victory.  

It reminded us at HELLO! of Spain's first World Cup victory back in 2010 – when Leonor and Sofia were much smaller!

Leonor, then aged four, was seen hugging the trophy alongside then-captain and goalkeeper Iker Casillas, as the team was received by the royal family at the Zarzuela Palace. 

The sisters were dressed in adorable matching mini football kits and sandals alongside their proud parents. 

Spanish royals attend the World Cup final

On Sunday, Queen Letizia, 53, arrived at the final wearing a stunning scarlet midi dress, paying tribute to the team's colours. 

King Felipe, 58, meanwhile, coordinated in a navy suit with a crisp white shirt and bold red tie as the royal couple cheered on the Spanish side from the stands.

The monarch presented the iconic World Cup trophy to the victorious squad, while Letizia smiled proudly beside him as the players gathered around.

The royal couple was also photographed warmly greeting team members and embracing officials after Spain completed their memorable tournament campaign.

The King and Queen joined global leaders, such as President Donald Trump from a bulletproof VIP glass box, while Leonor and Infanta were pictured elsewhere in the stadium.

After the match, the royal family posted on social media: "Champions of the world!! Congratulations 💪🏻

"This star is the prize for a road as long as demanding, traveled with effort, sacrifice, consistency, and an exemplary delivery in every match."

They added: "You have faced every challenge with the conviction of a great team and you have taken the name of Spain to the highest.

"Congratulations to the players, the technical staff, and all the fans. Today we celebrate a title; tomorrow we remember a legend."
