Denmark's Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik have been making some furry friends during their annual break in France. The royal couple were photographed, along with a new puppy, outside their summer residence in Caix.

Spending a few weeks at the chateau gives the family a chance to disconnect from the pressures of life in Copenhagen. It also gives Henrik the opportunity to tend to his Cahors vineyards, which are renowned in the world of viticulture.

He and Margrethe bought the estate in 1974 and immediately set about restoring it. The historic building, which once formed part of the defences for the local town, dominates the picturesque plain on which it is set.

The prince's love of this region stems, in part, from the fact that he was born here. But the beautiful countryside and spectacular castles of the region charm most people who pass through. Holidaymakers can pay a visit to the spectacular Valentre Fortress bridge or simply let their troubles drift away by taking a boat ride on the River Lot.
