Inside Madonna's strict childhood rules for oldest kids Lourdes and Rocco — including surprising ban at home

Madonna is one of the most famous stars in the world, but to her six children, she's just mom! 

The award-winning singer has been known to run a tight ship when raising her kids, who range in age from 29 to 13. Her parenting has been praised by many - most recently by her good friend, Rosie O'Donnell. 

The star opened up in a new interview with People about her friendship with Madonna, and gave an insight into her oldest two children, Lourdes and Rocco's childhood.

Rosie's four oldest children are similar ages to Lourdes and Rocco and as a result they spent a lot of time together. Discussing their playdates, Rosie said: "Madonna has done one hell of a job raising those children, she ran a very tight ship, and I had a very not tight ship. 

"When her kid would come over, like Lola and Rocco, when they were little, as soon as she left they came over for playdate and I would give them an ice pop. And one of them fell on the floor and I was like 'you can have another one, we have so many ice pops here,' and I turned on the cartoons, they didn't get to watch TV."

Rosie continued: "But she's an amazing mother and those kids are concert pianists and artists and singers and she is pretty phenomenal. And a motherless daughter, she had to mother without being mothered, even younger than I was when her mother died. I have nothing but respect and admiration." 

Rosie is mom to Parker, 31, Chelsea, 28, Blake, 26, Vivienne, 23, who she shares with ex-wife Kelli Carpenter. She shares Clay with late former wife Michelle Rounds.

Madonna is mom to Lourdes, 29, who she shares with ex Carlos Leon, Rocco, 24, who she shares with ex-husband Guy Richie. She went on to adopt David, 20, Mercy James, 20, and twins Stella and Estere, 13. 

The singer previously told Vanity Fair: "I have never encouraged my daughter Lola to make music or my son Rocco to paint. But I've always exposed them to art, to music, and I'm happy that they've found ways to express themselves. I have respect and admiration for them and for what they do."

She added: "And to see them happy, to witness their growth, to watch them evolve and then to find the things they love. Most of my happiness comes from my children. And much more from the inspiration that some artists give me."
