Danny DeVito gave a rare update on his unique relationship with estranged wife Rhea Perlman. The It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia actor opened up about his ex, sharing how they make their unique bond work.

In a new interview with AARP The Magazine, Danny, 81, reflected on how he met Rhea, 78, in the 1970s and their estranged relationship five decades later.

"We hit it off. We liked off-Broadway stuff," Danny recalled of he and his ex-wife's early days. "We went to movies all the time. We made little movies together – short films. We had a lot in common, and we fell in love. A nice Jewish girl from Brooklyn and an Italian from New Jersey: I cooked and she ate."

The couple acted on-screen together often during their relationship

The funny couple tied the knot in January 1982 and welcomed their three children: daughters Lucy, Grace, and son Jake. But, after 30 years of marriage, Danny and Rhea separated in 2012. They reconciled a year later, but separated for good in March 2017.

Nine years later, Danny and Rhea aren't officially divorced, and the Batman Returns actor revealed he doesn't plan on ever finalizing the divorce.

"We're always over at [Rhea's] house. We see the grandchildren together, that kind of stuff," he told AARP. "So that's a good relationship."

Danny and Rhea are still close friends years after their divorce

This sentiment seems to be a steady one for the former couple. In 2022, Rhea told People: "We're still separated, but we see each other often, and we're still a family. We can do things together, we can do things separately. I'm really, really glad that Danny and I were able to navigate some rough days to be able to have this different kind of relationship. I think it's pretty rare, but we agree on so many things that it makes sense."

What is Danny DeVito doing now?

The 81-year-old comedic legend is showing no signs of slowing down. Danny recently produced the comedy-thriller Drag about two sisters with a contentious relationship, which starred his children Lucy and Jake alongside Lizzy Caplan.

Danny and Rhea's daughter Lucy followed in her parents footsteps

"You know, we're so supportive of each other," Lucy shared with People at the SXSW Film & TV Festival: "Drag was a family affair working with my dad and my brother. And, my mom, my sister, they're in L.A. rooting us on. And, you know, my husband and everyone. It was a family collaboration."

Further, Danny is set to appear as Grandpa Eddie in Jumanji: Open World, which premieres on Christmas 2026. "The older I get, the better I get for that part, so just bring it on," he told AARP.
