Matt Bellamy made headlines this week when he filed for divorce from his wife of seven years, Elle Evans.

The Muse frontman, 48, and the model, 36, quietly separated in the summer of 2025 following "unexpected circumstances," and on Wednesday, August 12, he filed papers in Los Angeles to officially end their marriage.

While it appeared the former couple had remained on good terms, Elle recently told TMZ that Matt made the marriage so "unbearable" that the divorce filing was "a long time coming."

One ex Matt does have a good relationship with is his former fiancée, Kate Hudson, whom he dated from 2010 to 2014.

Matt and Kate dated from 2010 to 2014

Matt's relationship with Kate

Matt and Kate first met at Coachella in 2010, when she was introduced to him by a high school friend while they were all watching Radiohead's Thom Yorke perform. He soon asked for her number, and their relationship blossomed quickly.

"Matthew was polite and immediately protective, which for somebody like me who's all over the place is important," she told InStyle magazine in 2011. "He is just an amazing person."

"In the beginning I felt like, okay, this is going to be heavy. Am I prepared for this? Because it had been a while and I wasn't looking for that. But I just couldn't stay away. I wanted to talk to him and be with him all the time. On our first dates we would take long walks and talk the entire day.

It didn't take long for the couple to fall deeply in love – and, according to Kate, pregnancy was a natural next step. "Well, it wasn't like we didn't know what we were doing!" she joked. "There were no ovulation kits involved. We were tempting fate, and it worked."

They welcomed their son, Bingham, now 15, in July 2011, three months after they got engaged that April.

Matt and Kate had an amicable breakup

Kate and Matt's breakup

By December 2014, the couple had quietly ended their engagement, with Kate's representative telling People: "Kate and Matt have been separated for some time now. Despite this, they remain very close friends and committed co-parents."

Speaking about their split on the How to Fail podcast last February, Kate said: "We weren't right for each other and we tried really, really, really hard and instead of blaming or creating the argument or creating the problem, it was just like, 'I don't want to keep going down this path.'

"It's very easy for me because I'm an Aries and I like new things and I have the means to take care of my kids by myself but I want to find the right person, the right fit and sometimes you're just not."

Are Matt and Kate still friends?

Despite their split, Matt and Kate have remained close friends and successfully co-parent their son. The rocker even attended Kate's eldest son, Ryder's graduation from New York University in May 2026.

"We're so close... I love him, his wife, his family, the kids," Kate said of Matt on the How to Fail podcast.

The former couple's friendship has even rubbed off on their daughters. "Our kids are so close. (My daughter) Rani and his little girl, Lovella, they're so close," Kate added.

Matt's secret split from Elle Evans

In June 2026, Matt confirmed that he and his now-estranged wife, Elle, separated in the summer of 2025, admitting that their breakup centered around "unexpected circumstances."

Matt said their split was hard to explain, but he had to "prioritize" their two children, daughter Lovella, six, and son George, two. "It's one of those situations that involves something that people wouldn't normally think it is," he told The i Paper.

"It was a set of really unexpected circumstances. It's the kind of thing no one really prepares for in life," he continued, admitting he wasn't sure how to proceed. "It threw me off, and I had to prioritise looking after the kids and creating stability at home."

Matt and Elle started dating in 2015 and announced their engagement in December 2017, during a romantic holiday in Fiji. They tied the knot in Malibu on August 10, 2019, with their close friends and family in attendance.

Matt filed for divorce from Elle in the Los Angeles Superior Court on Wednesday, August 12, after seven years of marriage, citing "irreconcilable differences" as the reason for their split; however, he did not list a date of separation.

According to court documents obtained by TMZ, he asked the court to award Elle spousal support in accordance with their prenuptial agreement.
