The Sound of Music star's lookalike granddaughter takes on her iconic role 60 years later — see them side-by-side

Over 60 years since its release, The Sound of Music still remains one of the most pivotal musicals ever put to screen.

Starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer in the lead roles, the film was a landmark critical and commercial success, still reigning as one of the highest grossing movies of all time when adjusted for inflation.

Its legacy has remained steadfast and beloved in the decades since, with that now fully carrying on across generations from one of the movie's own stars.

Angela Cartwright's granddaughter in her own role

Angela Cartwright, who played one of the von Trapp children, Brigitta, in the 1965 original, shared on social media last month that her own granddaughter is now playing that very same role in a local theatrical production in her school.

Standing beside her granddaughter, dressed in the movie's trademark style, Angela, now 73, proudly beamed. She captioned the snap: "This weekend, I watched my granddaughter, Addie, perform as Brigitta in her theater production of 'The Sound of Music'."

"It was an emotional moment, thinking back 60 years to when I played Brigitta in the film," she gushed. "To sit in the audience and watch a new generation bring this beautiful story to life was truly special. And for my granddaughter to play Brigitta, well some moments remind you just how timeless a story—and the memories it creates—can be."

The movie's official Instagram page commented: "So special," on the post, with a fan also writing: "What an incredibly special blessing for you. Warms my heart just reading about it," plus another saying: "The movie of my childhood! How lovely for you to have this experience with your beautiful granddaughter."

Angela Cartwright's life and career

Just like her granddaughter might prove to be, Angela was a child star herself, although that extended beyond just The Sound of Music. Prior to her appearance in the movie, she was a regular cast member on The Danny Thomas Show from 1957 to 1964, and had been acting for nearly a decade. Her older sister is actress Veronica Cartwright, best remembered for her work in sci-fi projects.

She continued acting after the musical, appearing in Lost in Space from 1965 to 1968 as Penny Robinson, and carrying that role as far forward as 2018. Angela appears at several conventions and fan events to this day for Lost in Space especially. She has been a photographer for over three decades, tying the knot with Steve Gullion in 1976, welcoming two children.

The Sound of Music's success

The Sound of Music followed on a remarkable two years for Julie Andrews, who'd won her first Oscar the year prior for her work in Mary Poppins. The Sound of Music became the highest grossing movie of all time upon release, surpassing Gone with the Wind.

At the 1966 Academy Awards, it won five total awards, including Best Picture, tying with Doctor Zhivago at the ceremony, another one of the highest grossing films of all time. Julie was nominated for Best Actress once again, but lost this time to Julie Christie for her work in Darling.
