Mark Hamill and his wife of 47 years, Marilou Hamill, have sparked an unexpected debate after a series of throwback photos resurfaced online, with fans all making the very same observation.
The nostalgic images, which date back to the couple's early years together in the late 1970s, show the Star Wars legend posing alongside his then-newlywed wife shortly after they tied the knot in 1978. But rather than simply celebrating the pair's enduring romance, many fans became distracted by one surprising detail.
Across social media, commenters couldn't help but point out just how alike the couple looked, noting their matching feathered hairstyles, similar smiles and strikingly similar facial features.
"We really do start looking like our spouses," one person wrote, while another joked: "They look like brother and sister."
A third added: "I can't unsee it now," as others echoed the same sentiment.
Fans spot uncanny resemblance
The resurfaced photographs chart the couple's relationship from the very beginning, before Mark became one of Hollywood's biggest stars thanks to his iconic role as Luke Skywalker in Star Wars.
While many fans were struck by the resemblance, others pointed out there may be a scientific explanation.
Some research has suggested that couples in long-term relationships can gradually begin to resemble one another over time. Experts have theorised this could be due to shared facial expressions, similar lifestyles and even adopting comparable hairstyles and fashion choices over the years.
Whether or not that's the case, fans agreed that once the similarity had been pointed out, it was impossible to ignore.
A Hollywood love story that has stood the test of time
Beyond the sibling comparisons, the throwback photos also reignited admiration for one of Hollywood's longest-lasting marriages.
Mark met Marilou before Star Wars transformed him into an international superstar. At the time, she was working as a dental hygienist, and the pair married in December 1978, just over a year after the first film's release.
Together they have welcomed three children, Nathan, Griffin and Chelsea, and have largely kept their family life out of the public eye despite Mark's decades-long career in film and television.
Many fans suggested that Marilou's decision to remain outside the entertainment industry may have helped keep the couple grounded throughout the pressures of fame.
'The best decision I ever made'
Mark has never been shy about crediting his wife for their lasting marriage.
During the 2025 San Diego International Film Festival, where he received the Gregory Peck Award for Cinematic Excellence, the 74-year-old actor ended his acceptance speech with a heartfelt tribute to Marilou.
"In 1978, I married my former dental hygienist, Marilou Hamill – the best decision I ever made," he said.
He continued: "She gave me three beautiful children. She's been with me through thick and thin and the ups and downs in this crazy business. I can't thank her enough. I love you."
