For a generation who grew up in the 2000s, Hayden Panettiere and Michelle Trachtenberg will forever be remembered together on the ice.

The former child stars played rival figure skaters who became unlikely friends in Disney's 2005 movie Ice Princess, with Michelle taking the lead as aspiring skater Casey Carlyle and Hayden starring as Gen Harwood. Now, more than two decades later, fans are mourning the heartbreaking fact that both actresses have died in their thirties, just 18 months apart.

Hayden died on Sunday, August 16, aged 36. Her death was confirmed by her family, while authorities said she was found unresponsive at a home in Greenville, South Carolina. Her cause of death has not yet been determined and officials have said there were no signs of foul play.

Her death comes less than two years after Michelle died aged 39 in February 2025. Her cause of death was subsequently determined to be complications from diabetes mellitus. For fans of Ice Princess, the loss of both women so young has prompted an outpouring of nostalgia for the movie that first brought them together.

Hayden Panettiere and Michelle Trachtenberg's friendship

Both actresses were already seasoned performers when they were cast in Ice Princess.

Michelle had been acting since childhood, becoming a familiar face through Harriet the Spy and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, while Hayden had appeared in Remember the Titans, Raising Helen and several television shows.

In Ice Princess, Michelle's Casey is a gifted high school student who discovers an unexpected talent for figure skating while researching a physics project.

Hayden played Gen, an accomplished competitive skater whose mother and coach, Tina Harwood, was portrayed by Sex and the City star Kim Cattrall.

Although Casey and Gen initially find themselves in competition, their relationship develops into a friendship, with Gen ultimately helping Casey recognize her talent.

Michelle reflected on the characters' relationship in a 2006 interview with Disney Movie Surfers. "Gen is the star skater, and Casey admires her for her technique and ability," she explained. "[They] develop a friendship throughout the film, and Gen helps Casey realize that she really is a great skater."

Hayden was just a teenager when she made the film and later revealed how seriously she had thrown herself into learning to skate for the role.

"I actually taught myself a scratch spin, which is the really fast blur spins," she told Liveabout, proudly revealing that one of the spins seen at the end of her performance really was her.

She learned many of her own tricks, although the more complicated triple jumps were performed by a skating double.

There was one unexpected complication: her double naturally rotated in the opposite direction. "The weirdest thing about it was that she spun and jumped to the left, and I did it to the right," Hayden explained. "So, I had to relearn everything and do it all to the left, which was a little bit of a pain in the rear."

Asked whether she was more similar to Gen or Michelle's character Casey, Hayden believed she fell somewhere between the two. "I am more of a laid back girl than Gen is," she said. "She's definitely a girly girl, very into her looks."

She added: "I definitely like sweat pants and my comfy clothes, my Uggs and my pajamas. But I like school and I'm pretty good at school. I get A's. I do like science, too."

Hayden Panettiere and Michelle Trachtenberg reunited years later

Their lives and careers went in different directions after Ice Princess, but their paths crossed publicly again six years later.

In 2011, Hayden and Michelle reunited in New York City for the unveiling of Stuart Weitzman's Young Hollywood Cares Collection, which raised money for ovarian cancer research. The former co-stars smiled together on the red carpet, by then having both cemented themselves as major television stars.

Michelle had gone on to play the deliciously calculating Georgina Sparks in Gossip Girl, having already become beloved as Dawn Summers in Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Hayden, meanwhile, became one of the defining television faces of the 2000s as Claire Bennet in Heroes before earning two Golden Globe nominations for her portrayal of troubled country star Juliette Barnes in Nashville. Both had experienced the unusual pressures of growing up in front of cameras, beginning their careers long before reaching adulthood.

Ice Princess stars remembered

Following Hayden's death, Kim Cattrall was among those remembering her former co-star. Sharing a photograph of herself with Hayden from Ice Princess, the actress wrote simply: "Rest in peace sweet Hayden. Gone far too soon."

The coincidence of losing both young women at the heart of the beloved Disney movie has proved particularly emotional for its fans, with social media filled with scenes and photographs of Casey and Gen together.

For many, Ice Princess was more than another early-2000s Disney movie. Its story of ambition, friendship and finding the confidence to pursue an unconventional dream became part of their childhood.

Hayden's death was confirmed by her father, Skip Panettiere, who remembered his daughter as "an incredible light and a force of nature" who brought joy to both those who knew her and the millions who watched her onscreen.
