Legendary actor Kevin Kline has been a Hollywood staple ever since he made his film debut in 1982's Sophie's Choice alongside Meryl Streep, and he has continued to capture audiences with his comedic charm and warm spirit.
The star, who acted in everything from The Big Chill and Silverado to Dave and In & Out, hit a new stride in 1989 when he won an Academy Award for his wild performance in A Fish Called Wanda, alongside Jamie Lee Curtis.
Where is Kevin Kline now?
38 years on from the iconic role, Kevin now leads a quieter life living in the Upper East Side of Manhattan, New York City, with his wife, Phoebe Cates. Kevin stepped out in a rare appearance in February 2026 for the premiere of his new series, American Classic, in NYC, looking just as dapper as ever.
He rocked white hair and a gray suit, yet stood tall alongside his castmates, including Laura Linney. The synopsis for the series reads: "Richard Bean suffers a spectacular public meltdown and returns to his tiny hometown and the family-run theater where he first became aware of his own brilliance."
While many fans believed Kevin to have retired in recent years, the 79-year-old has been more selective in the projects he chooses to take on; he appeared in 2021's The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, followed by a return to Broadway with The Front Page and a part in 2025's A Big Bold Beautiful Journey.
He also continues to voice Mr Calvin Fischoeder in the animated series Bob's Burgers, and celebrated his 37th wedding anniversary with Phoebe in March.
Kevin Kline's life in Manhattan
The couple live in Manhattan, where Phoebe runs a clothing boutique that she has headed since 2005.
"Everyone said, 'Why would you want to do that? Retail is terrible,' but I dreamed it," the Fast Times at Ridgemont High actress said on The Big Idea.
"I kept a dream journal where we would joke about it. I would cut out photos of great, innovative products, and my kids would joke, 'That's for the store.' I knew that acting wasn't an option for me. I wasn't driven to do it again."
Kevin, who welcomed kids Owen and Greta with Phoebe, shared with The Guardian that he chose to settle down and start his family in his early 40s. "I was 40-ish when I finally stopped obsessing about acting and thought it would be nice to have a life and actually got married," he recalled.
However, he was happy to continue working, and the three-time Tony Award winner still enjoys getting onstage to this day.
"I prefer to work. I like some structure to my day. But I am more and more determined, with every passing year, to live life, as opposed to 'having a career' that is in some way stellar," he said. "And I always have the theaters. There's always King Lear."
