Gabrielle Union proved that age is just a number when she stepped out at South Beach in Miami, looking better than ever in a bold red bikini. The 53-year-old turned heads in the string bikini, which featured a twist at the front, and she paired the look with a black patterned bandana and oversized black sunglasses.

Gabrielle had a smile on her face as she joined her husband, Dwyane Wade, near the surf, just days before her 54th birthday.

The Bring It On star has dealt with backlash in the past for showcasing her svelte bikini body, and responded to one social media user's vitriol on the Who What Wear podcast.

"Somebody said, 'You're old enough to be somebody's grandma, why are you still in – like wearing swimsuits?'" she said.

She has been open about the challenges of aging in the spotlight

"I'm like, 'First of all, they're not just swimsuits. They are thongs, and you're going to see these cheeks until my [expletive] literally falls off, and I might just wear a bikini in the casket."

Gabrielle added that she had been dealing with ageism in Hollywood for years, and felt that she needed to speak up on the issue.

"[When you're] 35, they start treating you like you've got osteoporosis. You start becoming invisible, and it's a weird, empty feeling to feel like you're disappearing in front of your own eyes. You start taking on the same attitude as society that believes that you lack value," she explained.

"I don't want anyone else to feel that invisibility and that sense of worthlessness because the only people that we need to validate us is us," she added. "And sometimes, the more that you validate your damn self, the more people are like, 'Yeah'."

Gabrielle Union's anti-aging secrets

Gabrielle, who has long been asked about her anti-aging secrets, shared that her best tip was to say "hell no" more often and to learn the importance of rest.

"I get asked all the time how I look so young. I don't like needles. I'm not going to rule out Botox, but the idea of putting a needle in my face – I'm not there yet," she told Women's Health. "Of course, as I've aged, everything on my body hurts! My hips, back, shoulders – lots of aches and pains."

Gabrielle revealed that getting plenty of rest kept her looking youthful

"My best anti-aging tip is the ability to say no, no, and hell no," the mother of one declared.

"We run ourselves ragged saying yes to every freaking thing, whether it's to our family, spouses or careers. I sleep eight hours a day and don't let myself stress out. A lot of people call it selfish, but I don't have any wrinkles."

Gabrielle made an emotional appearance on October 20 on an episode of Dancing With the Stars to support her 10 Things I Hate About You co-star, Julia Stiles, during her dance.

Julia paid tribute to the late actor Heath Ledger, who passed away in 2008, nine years after the hit romcom was released. The actress' support crew included her and Gabrielle's former castmates, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Andrew Keegan, Larisa Oleynik and Susan May Pratt.
