Cher's daughter Chastity to undergo sex change

Chastity Bono, the only child of Cher and her late husband Sonny Bono, is to become a man. She began a sex change procedure shortly after her 40th birthday in March. 

Her publicist confirms Chastity, who prefers to be called Chaz, has begun the gender swapping process. "Yes, its true. Chaz, after many years of consideration, has made the courageous decision to honour his true identity."

"He is proud of his decision and grateful for the support and respect that has already been shown by his loved ones."

The political and social activist, who told her parents she was gay while at university on 1987, has the blessing of her famous mum who once admitted she "flipped out" when her daughter first revealed her sexuality.

"Cher is very supportive and has known about Chastity wanting to do this for a very long time," a source said. "This will be a long process, but it's something Chastity has wanted to do for many years".  The singer is pictured with her daughter in 1998
