28 JULY 2003
Liza Minelli has split up with her fourth husband David Gest sixteen months after their lavish wedding in New York. "I can confirm that they're separated, but that's all I know," said her publicist Warren Cowan.

According to press reports, David is now staying in Hawaii while Liza has stayed on at their residence in New York.

The A-list couple were married in March 2002 in one of the most feted social events of the year. Michael Jackson, Elizabeth Taylor, Mia Farrow and a host of other glamorous stars were among the guests who turned out for their nuptials.

Their marriage came after Liza had overcome a series of health problems, including a near-fatal bout of viral encephalitis and a prolonged battle with substance abuse. She looked to be back on form, however, as she launched a successful concert tour and announced plans for a reality TV show.

But concerns about her health were provoked once again when she checked into a Pennsylvania rehab clinic in March. And that same month she and David cancelled plans for a lavish anniversary party in Times Square, fuelling rumours that their relationship was in trouble.

It is not clear, as yet, how long the couple have been apart or whether they intend to divorce.
