The Maldives
This ultimate Robinson Crusoe
archipelago is the perfect getaway.
There's little to do here but laze
about and soak up the sun. The
1,000 islands (of which only 87 are
for tourists) have been described
poetically as a string of pearls in the
Indian Ocean, with turquoise
lagoons, coral reefs and powdery
sand beaches fringed with palms.
You can walk round many of the
islands in less than an hour, and most
islands have only one hotel, but
you're bound to find one to suit.
Styles vary widely from the ultraluxurious
to "no news, no shoes"
islands for escapists. Crime is almost
unheard of and there's no hassling
from vendors. Vaccinations are not
necessary, either.
Who holidays there: Celebrity honeymooners. Former Atomic Kitten singer Jenny Frost is planning to get married here in the
new year. The islands are also superb
for scuba-diving and snorkelling fans.
Where to stay: Huvafen Fushi is the Maldives' hottest hotel, with a stunning glasswalled underwater spa.
The Reethi Rah will feature 60
rooms, including ten water bungalows,
when it opens next year.
Dhoni Mighili features six rustic
beach bungalows, each with its own
24-hour butler.
