Five fine restaurants with five-star views

Luxury menus, exquisite cuisine, signature dishes and cellars full of carefully selected, fine wines... but above all, views to take your breath – but not your appetite – away. That's what our five chosen restaurants have to offer.

Le Jules Vernes

Le Jules Verne, Paris
Some say this is the most romantic restaurant in the City of Love, perhaps in the whole world. Even if it isn't, it's certainly one of the most impressive. With the famed chef Alain Ducasse behind a menu of fine French dishes, and the restaurant’s location, 125 metres up in the Eiffel Tower itself, it could hardly be otherwise. Enjoyment of the contemporary elegance of the dining room and the sophisticated cuisine is enhanced by a panoramic view of the City of Light, making it a delight for the eyes as well as the palate.

Asiate

Asiate, New York
Surely the height of luxury, Asiate, one of the dining options within the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in New York, combines simplicity, elegance and vitality in its decor – and floor-to-ceiling views over Central Park and Manhattan. On the 35th floor of the north tower of the Time Warner Centre, it's one of the Big Apple's favourite choices. Chef de Cuisine Brandon Kida draws on his travels and his Asian-American background to produce a seasonal menu of contemporary cuisine with international influence.

Ambrosia Restaurant

Ambrosia, Santorini, Greece
The rooftop terraces of this picturesque traditional restaurant, sculpted into the volcanic cliffs of Oia, offer unmatchable views of the southern Aegean Sea. There are few better places to enjoy a romantic candlelit dinner, under a dusky star-specked sky, or when the full moon bathes everywhere with her gentle light. The well-chosen Mediterranean and neoclassical Greek menu is based on fresh local produce from the island and features sea food brought daily from the market at Fira, as well as traditional vegetarian dishes.

Rosellini Restaurant

Rossellinis, Ravello, Italy
There are two reasons that Rossellinis is one of the most renowned restaurants on the Almafitana Coast. The first is its location in the Palazzo Sasso, a luxury twelfth century villa set on the cliffs of the picture postcard hill-top town of Ravello where it offers stunning views of fishing boats bobbing down below on the Mediterranean. The second reason is the cuisine: two Michelin stars proclaim the quality of the dishes created by chef Pino Lavarra in tribute to his homeland.

Tova-Dinig Restaurant

El Tovar Dining Room, Arizona

Casual elegance and a view that is nothing short of magnificent is what is offered at El Tovar Dining Room, right on the edge of the Grand Canyon. The great red gorge, carved out by the Colorado river in Arizona, is one of the world's natural wonders, but however familiar it is from the movies, there's nothing quite like seeing it with your own eyes. Opened in 1905, the hotel where the restaurant is located is the oldest in the National Park and has welcomed such illustrious guests as Roosevelt and Einstein.
