POSH AND BECKS SPLASH OUT £150,000 FOR A SAFE RIDE

It’s a £150,000 Mercedes with an airtight passenger compartment in case of gas attacks, run-flat tyres that are unstoppable in a shootout, and a reinforced floor designed to withstand landmine blasts. But this isn’t James Bond’s newest set of wheels – it’s the Beckham family car.

England football captain David Beckham and his wife, pregnant Spice Girl Victoria, who just landed on the latest British Rich List, have added the armour plated Mercedes S500 to their collection of high end vehicles, which also includes a £110,000 Ferrari Maranello, a £90,000 Lincoln Navigator and a £60,000 BMW X5. But the high-security acquisition is clearly not just an pricey addition to the impressive fleet. “This new one is not for show,” says a friend. “He’ll do anything to protect his family.”

The car, one of only 2,000 available, also has a satellite navigation system and inch-thick bulletproof glass windows.

The outlandish safety measures are not unreasonable given the celebrity couple’s history of security scares, including a kidnap threat against their young son Brooklyn and the arrest of a man who had attempted to cut the brakes on Becks’s Ferrari. Most recently, a schizophrenic stalker was detained in a mental institution indefinitely after breaking into in the family’s apartment block and stealing mail.
