It was all smiles as Canadian prime minister Stephen Harper and wife Laureen met with British premier Tony and Cherie Blair in London recently.

The Canadian power-couple, who had stopped off in the British capital en route for the G8 Summit in St Petersburg, clearly hit it off with their UK counterparts as they joked together outside 10 Downing Street. Reports in the Canadian press indicate the meeting was something of a high point for Mr Harper who, according to a senior aide, is something of a fan of the Labour leader.

And the politicians' spouses, both elegant in crisp jackets, seemed to be getting along famously, too. The pair share more than just a sense of style, as both are successful in their own right. Laureen is a former journalist and photographer, while Cherie, the daughter of actor Tony Booth, is a notable lawyer.

Following a morning tete-a-tete between the two premiers at Number 10, the Harpers moved on to Buckingham Palace where they were welcomed by the Queen.

The Canadian prime minister's attendance at the G8 Summit marks his first major international get together of this kind since he was elected earlier this year.
