For most people community service would mean an unpleasant task to be got through as discreetly as possible. But Naomi Campbell turned her week-long sentence into one long fashion parade, culminating with a head-turning appearance on the final day in a £50,000 silver Dolce & Gabbana gown, set off with diamond earrings and necklace.
Head held high with the kind of attitude that earns her up to £30,000 a time on the catwalk, the supermodel arrived in a series of striking outfits to fulfil the penalty. Cashmere knits, stretch trousers and patent leather boots have all been pressed into duty for the trip to her clean-up job. Each new ensemble has been accessorised with designer sunnies and the season's key look - an oversize bag.
On her penultimate day the 36-year-old fashionista modelled a purple ruched blouse under a luxurious £50,000 Zandra Rhodes jacket. Meanwhile other labels to see the inside of the Sanitation Department's District 3 garage at Pier 36 have included Ralph Lauren, exclusive Italian designer line Bottega Veneta and Burberry.
Images of the fashion icon's daily ensembles, snapped by a photographer for US style bible W, will appear in the magazine in July. Mindful that she is paying off a debt to society, however, Naomi also plans to auction off her cleaning gear for Nelson Mandela's foundation for children.
