The Mamma Mia 2 trailer is here, and fans of the hugely successful original have been quick to discuss the upcoming sequel. The ABBA-themed musical film, which is due to be released in 2018, sees Christine Baranski (Tanya) and Rosie (Julie Walters) return to the island in Greece to help their goddaughter, Sophie (Amanda Seyfried), who is expecting her first child.

However, fans were devastated to learn that to protagonist of the original film, Donna (Meryl Streep) passed away before the events of the sequel, and took to Twitter to discuss the revelation. One person wrote: "Where is Meryl, what have they done to Donna, my heart is broken and I shouldn’t feel that way about the sequel to a film that changed my life," while another added: "Not to be dramatic but whoever decided to kill Donna off in Mamma Mia 2 has ruined Christmas."

Instead, the film focuses on a young Donna, played by Lily James, and details her relationships with Harry (Colin Firth), Sam (Pierce Brosnan) and Bill (Stellan Skarsgård). Speaking about the new film to Entertainment Weekly, Amanda said: "Truthfully, when they were like, 'We're making Mamma Mia 2,' I was like, 'That's going to be terrible.' But it's not! It's amazing… I actually had a better time than I did shooting the first movie. Everybody's back together and it's been 10 years. There's so much love and so much family that it's infused 100 times in this movie. It was so unexpected for me."

Lily plays a younger version of Donna

Praising Lily as a young Donna, she gushed: "As soon as you see Lily on screen, you're like, 'Oh my God, that's Donna! I'm seeing Donna when she was wild and young and free, and she has the essence that Meryl brought to it. And it's kind of extraordinary."
