Last Tango in Halifax is finally back for season five after a long break, and we can't wait to see what all of our favourite characters have been up to over in' Yorkshire! Of course, beloved characters like Gillian, Caroline, Alan and Celia can only be created with an incredibly talented cast, so check out the stars of season five here…
Sarah Lancashire – Caroline
Sarah plays the clever and sophisticated Caroline, who is raising her daughter, little Flora, after her wife Kate's tragic and shocking death in season four. Sarah is perhaps best known for her role as the straight talking sergeant Catherine Cawood in Happy Valley, which was incidentally also written by Last Tango's creator, Sally Wainwright. Sarah has also starred in Kiri and The Accident, and famously played Raquel Watts in Coronation Street from 1991 to 1996.
Nicola Walker – Gillian
Nicola plays the troublemaking yet loveable Gillian, Alan's daughter who ended season four by marrying Robbie, despite the knowledge that she had murdered his adopted brother (and her former husband) Eddie, and deciding that she would have to divorce him as soon as their honeymoon was over. We can't imagine that season five will be all smooth sailing for the farmer! Nicola has a seriously impressive filmography, and is also currently starring in The Split. She is also known for her roles in River and Unforgotten.

Derek Jacobi – Alan
Derek, 81, is perhaps best known as a stage actor, and has previously performed in Hamlet, Twelfth Night and Much Ado about Nothing. He is a two-time Olivier award winner, and has won a BAFTA for starring in I, Claudius. He was also nominated for a BAFTA for his role as a sweet, besotted Alan in Last Tango back in 2012. Despite perhaps being known for treading the boards, Derek has had an amazing film career too, and has previously starred in Murder on the Orient Express, Cinderella and Gladiator.

Anne Reid – Celia
Anne, 84, plays Celia, the old fashioned matriarch of the family who falls head over heels in love with her high school sweetheart again, 60 years after they last saw one another. Anne is perhaps best known for her role as Valerie Barlow in Coronation Street and Jean in Dinner Ladies. She also recently starred in Russell T Davies' BBC show Years and Years.

Tony Gardner – John
Tony plays Caroline's hapless ex-husband, John. The actor is perhaps best known for playing Brian in My Parents are Aliens, as well as Professor Shales in Fresh Meat.

Josh Bolt – Raff
Josh, 25, plays Gillian's smart and caring son, Raff. The actor was just 17 when he began filming the hit comedy drama, and has since gone on to have a brilliant career, starring in Benidorm, A Good Woman is Hard to Find, and opposite George Clooney in Catch 22.
Louis Greatorex – Lawrence
Louis, 23, plays Caroline's youngest and most difficult son, Lawrence. He has also previously starred in Death in Paradise, Netflix series Safe and The Bay.
