The Serpent had viewers on the edge of their seats during episode six on Sunday evening – and it seems that fans are saying a similar thing about the BBC drama's shifting timelines.

Taking to social media while watching the thriller, which features Tahar Rahim and Jenna Coleman as two of its leading stars, many commented on the confusing 'back and forth' that forms the show's timeline of events.

One person wrote: "Loved that #TheSerpent started tonight with 'Three months later' (or was three years?) when we hadn't seen anything yet. Later than what? Apart from the dizzying back and forth, it's still very good!"

Another echoed this, tweeting: "No fear of #TheSerpent using dates instead of X weeks earlier and Y years later eh?!", while a third joked: "This show goes back and forth so much I get travel sick #TheSerpent."

The sixth instalment in the gripping programme saw Charles' history explained in more detail, and viewers saw that his past contained more secrets than he initially let on. The episode delved into his previous marriage with Juliette, with whom he had a daughter, that came to an end before he embarked on his killing spree alongside Monique (Marie-Andree Leclerc) and Ajay.

Fans are also beginning to see Monique's guilt come to light, as she battles with her double life of murder and fraud, and continues to find out more and more about her partner's past.

The Serpent has proved to be a big hit with viewers

Monique's feeling of guilt is something that is authentic to the real life story, according to Nadine Gires. The neighbour, who is portrayed by Mathilde Warnier in the show, spoke to the Mirror about Monique's state of mind during the 1970s, explaining that she felt scared and helpless with Charles.

She told the paper: "I felt sorry for Marie-Andrée because she was a sad and simple person, not the movie star we see in the series. And she was Charles' prisoner. She told me, 'I have no passport, no money and if I try to leave he will kill me.'"
