We are so used to seeing Duchess Sophie swish her cascading long blonde locks that it was quite the shock when the royal debuted a brand new bob! The 61-year-old appeared to have around four inches taken off her mane, with the shorter length finishing above her collarbone.
Sophie stepped out at the Groundswell Regenerative Agriculture Festival at Lannock Farm, where she showcased her fresh look, which suited her pretty features, complemented by a fresh, visibly lighter blonde hue.
The royal, who has been married to Prince Edward for 27 years, has had long hair for over a decade, although she has dabbled in a bob over the years, notably sporting one in 2011, so it's been quite some time since she's opted to go short.
Sophie's 2011 bob
In 2011, Sophie's bob was swishy and voluminous with a fabulous side parting, and she appeared to have blow-dried it to perfection as she attended Zara and Mike Tindall's pre-wedding party in Edinburgh on the Royal Yacht Britannia.
The flattering style featured modern, flicked-out ends, and it complemented the peach-toned shift dress she wore to the momentous event.
Why a bob is timeless at any age
A bob is ideal for fine or thinning strands because shorter lengths instantly make hair look thicker. Blunt edges, like Sophie's new 'do, are especially effective, as they create the illusion of density.
"At the age of 50 plus, a bob can bring instant freshness as it removes tired, damaged ends, lifts the face, and creates a sense of movement that longer, heavier hair sometimes lacks," celebrity hairdresser Jason Collier previously told HELLO!. "It's also a cut that works brilliantly with natural silver tones, adding shine and definition."
Upkeep is key. "Bobs rely on sharp lines, so regular trims every 6-8 weeks are key to keeping the shape fresh," he added. "This cut looks stunning with natural greys, but highlights or balayage can add dimension. Shorter lengths allow colour to shine more brightly, giving the hair extra vibrancy," he noted.
