Prince Philip cut a solitary figure when he attended an Albert Hall concert to mark his 80th birthday this week. Although Prince Edward and Sophie Wessex were also present at the star-studded show, the Queen was absent – carrying out official duties in Germany – as were the couple’s three older children.

The Duke of Edinburgh found some unlikely company, however, in the Popstars band Hear’Say, who performed alongside more mature entertainment heavyweights Dame Shirley Bassey, Lionel Richie and Dina Carroll.

Whether or not the newly made teen idols managed to add the Duke to their burgeoning list of fans is unknown, but with several generations of performers present, there was something to suit all tastes.

The concert, which kicked off a series of events to celebrate Prince Philip’s birthday on June 10, came just a day after the Duke had to deny allegations that he had made disparaging remarks about Prince Charles.
