On St. Patrick’s Day 2026, the Princess of Wales will join the Irish Guards at Mons Barracks to celebrate their 125th anniversary and a year of high-tech modernization. As Colonel of the Regiment, the Princess will present traditional shamrocks to soldiers and the regimental mascot, Seamus the Irish Wolfhound.
The unit has recently transitioned into a drone-enabled "robotic" force. The day honours a busy 2025, including deployments to 13 countries and training Ukrainian forces.
To mark the milestone, the Princess will also present Long Service and Good Conduct medals to three senior soldiers, concluding the anniversary celebrations with a royal salute and three cheers.

An update on the ground
Hi everyone, I’m here at a very cloudy Mons Barracks in Aldershot for the St Patrick’s Day parade.
We’re expecting to see the Princess of Wales in about 20 minutes, but the band is already setting up, the sprigs of shamrock are ready to be presented, and I’ve already caught a glimpse of the regiment’s Irish wolfhound Mascot Turlough Mor, also known as Seamus, who was one of the highlights of last year’s event.
We’re expecting a very busy day today, so stay tuned!
Setting up at the St Patrick's Day parade
An update from me as things get set up here at Mons Barracks.
Kate will be walking down here at the front before completing a circuit. There will be a royal salute, then the national anthem, and a flower presentation.
The mascot will be last to get the shamrock.

Tree planting for Danish royals
The state visit to Australia continued on Monday in Canberra, and new pictures of Queen Mary show her and King Frederik planting two trees in the garden at Government House with the Governor-General couple.
Kangaroos and cockatoos were part of the natural surroundings during the tree-planting. The Danish royals also attended a wreath-laying ceremony at the Australian War Memorial. Here, the Royal Couple honoured the efforts of the Australian Armed Forces in wars and international missions since World War I and placed poppies at the memorial plaques for Australian Air Officers Geoffrey Herbert Brandon Slinn and Henry James Brock.
Meet Seamus!
I had the pleasure of meeting Seamus, the Irish wolfhound, alongside drummer Joseph Aldridge. Joseph spoke about what it was like when Kate met Seamus and gave out the shamrock.
"She loves animals, she told me last year when I saw her," he said. "She was estatic to see Seamus, she asked how well he is and I told her, 'Incredibly healthy for his age'.
"She was delighted to see him and present him with the shamrock this year."

The Princess of Wales was kindly presented with a bouquet of flowers from the daughters of the regimental quarter master.

Wrapping up at Mons Barracks
We're now wrapping up here at Mons Barracks, where it's now a very sunny day. The Princess has departed, and I've just spoken to drummer Joseph Aldridge, who is handling Seamus the Irish Wolfhound.
He told me that the Princess loves animals and was "delighted" to see Seamus again. Last year, it was quite difficult to present him with the shamrock, but they'd rehearsed this year so it all went smoothly!

A royal surprise for Greg James
Prince William delighted fans by surprising BBC Radio 1 DJ Greg James on his tandem bike as he cycles across the UK to raise money for Comic Relief.
William joined the presenter just north of Doncaster, where they cycled together through the South Yorkshire countryside.
Greg is set to make his way from from Weymouth to Edinburgh over eight days in order to raise awareness for the British charity.
"What you've done is set an example about helping out," William told Greg. "That's the thing. It’s volunteering some of your time, putting yourself through a bit of pain at the same time, and supporting others. It’s something we do very well in this country, but we don’t really shout about it enough.
"This challenge helps everyone see that. And it’s an amazing team effort. Huge well done, Greg."
Greg was pleased he "didn’t kill the future king", before thanking the prince and asking him if he'd felt safe.
Confirming he had, William joked: "I was worried, there’s a few potholes you hadn’t seen, but apart from that, we were okay, and I can tell you, you’ve raised £1,000,020."
