Princess Amalia, 22, reveals large scar on her arm following surgery after horse accident

Princess Catharina-Amalia of the Netherlands has unveiled her scar for the first time after her horse accident last year. 

The eldest daughter of King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima attended the opening gala of the 2026 FEI World Championships in Aachen on Tuesday evening, alongside royals including Queen Mary of Denmark and Zara Tindall. 

The Princess wore a sleeveless white and green striped dress from Nina Blanc, revealing a large scar along her upper arm for the first time. 

Amalia, 22, broke her arm last June after falling from her horse, Mojito. She underwent surgery at the UMC Utrecht and was seen wearing her arm in a sling over subsequent weeks.

She proudly displayed her scar at the event, bravely showing she isn't afraid to hide her injury. 

What happened to Princess Amalia?

Amalia, who is a keen equestrian and has ridden horses since an early age, fell from her horse last June. 

A statement from the Dutch palace said at the time: "The Princess of Orange broke her upper arm today after falling from her horse. She will undergo surgery at the UMC Utrecht.

"More information will follow as soon as it becomes clear what the possible consequences are for official obligations and other agreements."

Amalia was later discharged two days after being admitted to hospital and undergoing surgery. 

Her appearance at the equestrian championships is one of her few scheduled engagements before September, and shows her continued commitment to the horse world.

Earlier this year, Amalia completed her assignment as a military working student in the Royal Air Force – an important step for her future life as a royal and as queen. 

She is now continuing her education at the Defence College, combining her duties with her law studies at the University of Amsterdam.  

Royals who aren't afraid to show off their scars

Princess Amalia isn't the only royal who has a prominent scar.

Princess Eugenie, who welcomed a baby daughter with her husband Jack Brooksbank last week, famously underwent surgery for scoliosis at the age of 12.

She has a scar on her back, which her wedding dress in 2018 was designed to showcase, with an open back. 

The royal has also shared pictures of her scar on her Instagram account, telling her followers: "Scars are beautiful."

The Princess of Wales also has a three-inch scar, which runs along her temple. Following speculation in 2011 around the injury, a spokesperson for St James's Palace told the press: 'The scar is related to a childhood operation'.

Prince William also has a tiny scar on his forehead from being accidentally hit by a golf club aged eight.
