Princess Eugenie, 36, has welcomed a third child with her husband Jack Brooksbank, a baby girl. The youngest daughter of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and Sarah Ferguson shared the happy news on social media with a sweet photograph of the precious newborn. There's a cute detail in the picture that you may have missed!

The baby was seen wearing a pastel pink baby grow with angel wings on and a blue hat adorned with heart and butterfly drawings from Crown Princess Marie-Chantal of Greece's brand. Underneath the newborn was a blue-hued mat, which could well be a hand-me-down from her siblings, as she has two older brothers - August and Ernest.

The royals are famed for frugal hand-me-downs, with many members inheriting clothes and jewellery from siblings as well as previous generations.

While blue is by no means reserved for boys, the mat could simply be standard hospital bedding - or it may well be a sentimental hand-me-down from her older brothers, August and Ernest, that Eugenie and Jack wanted to reuse.

The statement issued on Instagram read: "Jack and I are so excited to announce Baby Girl Brooksbank!! We are beyond in love with our girlie."

A change in tradition

In a break from tradition, Eugenie gave birth at a hospital in Lisbon, Portugal, instead of the iconic Portland Hospital in London, an announcement from Buckingham Palace revealed. It also noted that the baby was born weighing six pounds nine ounces. Their daughter was the smallest of all three children as August weighed eight pounds and one ounce while Ernest came in at seven pounds and one ounce.

The reason Eugenie chose to give birth in Portugal is because she splits her time between there and the UK. The royal has previously spoken about her love for being in Europe due to her ability to fly under the radar. "This is why Portugal is the dream because I can go to the supermarket in my exercise gear and my hair piled on my head and not mind. Not care. No one cares," she said during a Table Manners podcast.

The new baby's name

We all eagerly await an announcement about their daughter's name. Their sons full names are August Philip Hawke, born in February 2021, and Ernest George Ronnie, born in May 2023.

While it is not known what Eugenie will name her daughter, her middle name is a little easier to predict, thanks to tradition. It is likely that the baby will be given the middle name of Elizabeth, in honour of her great-grandmother, the late Queen Elizabeth II

Looking at the family tree, Princess Anne was born Anne Elizabeth Alice Louise, and she named her daughter Zara Anne Elizabeth Tindall

Meanwhile, Eugenie's sister was born Princess Beatrice Elizabeth Mary, and gave the middle name to both of her daughters – Sienna Elizabeth Mapelli Mozzi, and Athena Elizabeth Rose Mapelli Mozzi.
